A fresh westerly, sunny sky and the experienced Matt Armstrong and Peter Bourne on duty promised a great afternoon of racing.
Nice to see some familiar faces back at the club eager for their fix of sailing in the Bass Strait. Lisa Deppeler, along with Paul Cannon, forming a formidable crew on ‘Black Pearl’, and Maddie Deppeler on her laser, ‘One More Time’. Maddie’s presence and eagerness to share her vast sailing expertise making Morgan Stewart very happy! Also making a return to racing after boat ‘troubles’ was Suzie McBride with Caroline Wren, on ‘April Dancer’.
With the wind gusting up around 20knots before the start of the race, getting to the start line and maintaining a start position proved tricky.
The keel boat start, ’10 + 1’, ‘Boheme’ and ‘Interlude’, provided just a little bit of controversy with ‘Boheme’ heading over the line a few minutes before the actual start of the race – but we’ll save that story for another time!
’10 + 1’ with Mick Heland at the helm handled the conditions beautifully, and the fellows on ‘Interlude’ once again looked at ease and very comfortable.
The second start saw Maddie and Morgan handling their Lasers, in very trying conditions, like a couple of old pro’s. A credit to both sailors for finishing the race.
The rest of the fleet was well and truly dominated by ‘Black Pearl’ – a beautiful sight to see. A tight tussle between ‘April Dancer’, “Sista Mermaid’ (Kelly Hurley & Anton Tibbits) and ‘Apollo Bay & District Community Bank’ (Ian Campbell & Tim Cobb) saw ‘April Dancer’ pull it together in the last leg to finish just ahead of the Ynglings.
