Saturday 26 January

Saturday’s club racing continued the long run of near perfect sailing conditions we have enjoyed this season.    In a break with long standing tradition the rescue boat crew set a larger, triangular course omitting the windward and return leg, the bane of the keel boat crews.    Also, in another break with tradition, the keel boats got away to an excellent start, a spectacular sight as they were pushed hard to windward through the choppy seas.    The dinghies, following 5 minutes after the keel boats, also got away to a closely contested start, but why Lisa and Pat in Black Pearl returned to cross the start line again baffled the rescue boat crew!    Boheme led the fleet from the start and held a comfortable lead throughout the race to take line honours.   Tumbleweed, in an unprecedented burst of speed, appeared to be about to challenge Ten Plus One for second place in the queue, but Ken, having pressganged the crew from Outsider for a term of hard labour on Ten Plus One, managed to hold on to his lead.    You can always tell Ken is getting desperate when you see him hoist his large red MPS (a lazy man’s spinnaker).

In the dinghy fleet, Lisa and Pat in Black Pearl, having given the rest of the fleet a generous head start while they messed around making multiple starts, forged their way through the fleet to take an impressive 6 minutes lead over Windswept.    While Tim and Caroline, driving their newly acquired Aphrodite hard throughout the race, followed less than 2 minutes behind Windswept.

The club’s rising young star, Morgan Stewart, sailing solo on Icebreaker, held her lead over the two Ynglings, Sista Mermaid  and Community Bank, with an impressive display of her sailing skills pushing the little Laser hard throughout the day.    Rumour has it that her mother, who sails Sista Mermaid, has been asking her for sailing tips!   Anton, Kelly’s co-crew, has apparently exhausted his.
