The Learn To Sail program this week saw our dinghies
sailing outside the harbour in a fresh 15 knot westerly
wind. It was great to see these kids and adults in
the boats plying around a set course. For those who
have been regular sailors over the years, their talents
were evident on the day. Our coaches, Peter Geekie
and Matt Armstrong, deserve a pat on the back for
their work with the Learn To Sail participants.
The main race saw a change in the wind direction
with a freshening southerly wind, 15 – 18 knots,
and also a change from dark, gloomy weather to sunny
and bright conditions.
Our race management team of first timers, Nick Martin
and Ross, under the watchful eye of Club Captain,
Leo Di Cecco, set a course that the sailors found
most enjoyable – the “reaches” and
“downwinds” were just the best fun for
everybody.
Good to see Craig Jenner and son back on the water,
also Paul Johnson in his Sabre. Geeks and Stewie jostled
for position all day with Matt and Gary, it was a
case of who went swimming the most! Captain Col and
Doug worked hard all day trying to stay in front of
Team Smith, but the 470 had the better of them at
the end of the day.
At this stage I must make mention of the Hell On
High Water Team, namely Peter Bourne and daughter,
Ella, who do more swimming than anybody. These two
are here every week in some difficult conditions and
they just keep on sailing. Keep the work up, Peter
and Ella, it will come together.
It was a great day for sailing, and I dare say Nick
Martin would have rather been out in his boat than
sitting on the rescue boat!
We have no race results as our handicapper was away.
Life is good, be happy, come sailing.
