It was learn to sail’s 2nd post X-mas class
and numbers were down due to the life saving competitions
in Warrnambool. It’s great to see the kids getting
involved in lots of the activities available in “The
Bay”. There were still plenty of kids left to
make it yet another great learn to sail day. Sailing
took place outside the harbour with our budding young
“Salty Dogs” showing their skills in the
reasonable breeze. Pete Geeky, with his extraordinary
teaching techniques, assisted by Russell Smith and
a few devoted parents, got the boats to follow each
other on the short course around the buoys, all bunched
together - well nearly! A few capsizes and a few swims
with some special methods of righting capsized dinghies
showed it to be a successful mornings’ work.
The short course race started at 1.35 with two starters
“Windswept” and “In The Pink”.
A SW wind of 15 knots made for a quick race with “Windswept”
having had a great start and comfortably beating “In
The Pink”.
THE GREAT RACE
The keel boats (all two of them) were dominated by
“Interlude’s” perfect sailing team.
A fantastic start put them well ahead of the whole
fleet for quite some time. Spinnaker Runs! Consistent
teamwork! Steady sailing! Marriner the Mariner! The
dinghies followed with the “Flying Fifteens”
in total control. Now, one would think that with a
small number of boats and a steady breeze that not
much was going to happen on this day. HUH!
The first leg had not even been completed when Mandy
decided to do some swimming preparation for the Commonwealth
Games by swimming behind the boat leaving the tiller
to it’s own fate. Not long after that “Tumbleweed
“ hooked on to a Bungee Leash and with Spinnaker
in full bloom, went up and back over the same 200M
for 15 mins.(I’ll get this right yet?). While
this was going on “Sweat Shop”, usually
top gun in the fleet, was all over the place, maybe
the shock of Jeffers actually turning up had Gary
addle-brained. This didn’t last long and they
were leading the fleet oh! Until that Spinnaker went
up.
As for “Miss Molly”, great race last week!
and not wanting to be out of the picture this week,
being so far back in the course Capt. Col. decided
to gouge out Doug’s eye with a spinnaker pole
leaving such a gory display they were forced to retire.
The champions of the day were “Windswept “
and “In The Pink” and even after Mandy’s
aquatic fantasies “ITP” left no room for
error on Ian & Leo’s parts. “Windswept”
stayed focused and would not be beaten over the line
beating “ITP” by about 20 secs. As the
fifteens were going over the finish line, somewhere
over near “King Island” Bill hadn’t
finished adding colour to the day. Looking to the
horizon, there it was, that big blue hull facing skyward
keel trying to make the surface. This whole time the
lads in the cat were just screaming around the course
doing twice the distance in half the time, looking
good.
Just another quiet day sailing at Apollo Bay. “Go
