| Tell
Tales 18th February 2006
An increase in wind velocity close to race start time,
and an additional late-starting keelboat, resulted
in a last minute change to the starting procedure.
The Rescue Boat crew communicates with competitors
via special coloured flags for all race information.
There are flags for the countdown to the start of
the race, with sequences showing 5,4, and 1 minute
to go. There are flags for the direction of the race
(in effect clockwise or the reverse), recalls, postponements
and shortened courses. There’s a finish flag
and there are flags instructing sub–groups of
boats when to start.
Unfortunately, two of the club’s foremost championship
contenders failed to read the flags. They started
5 minutes early, in effect jumping the gun and failing
to start.
“Not Your Average White Boat”, winner
of the Pre-Xmas race series, eventually caught on,
and after completing a superfluous lap, finally crossed
the start line at a blistering pace. NYAWB proceeded
to fly around the course at race winning speed - had
that extra lap not dragged them down to “last”.
“Sweatshop”, runner up in the Pre Xmas
series, also screamed around the course to be first
across the finish line. One lap short. In a race they
never officially started.
For the remaining crews it was a difficult afternoon’s
sailing, sudden wind-shifts and big gusts capsized
the smaller boats several times, with all crews –
even on the big yachts, constantly busy tweaking their
sail trim.
Our Colac guests, back again this week in a smaller
trailer-sailer, retired early, joined by the crew
of Hellanhighwater, after Helen’s cranium took
on the 470 dinghy’s boom in a capsize.
