Two races were held on Saturday with five yachts entering
each race. The big surprise was to see the 40' Jeauneau
Ten Plus One heading out the harbour
when we knew Uncle Ken (the owner) was tied up with
family commitments in Melbourne. Apparently, in an
act of Christmas generosity, Ken handed the keys to
regular crew Mick Heland for the weekend.
Race one saw an interesting start with Champagn
Jam crossing just ahead of Sweashop
after a possible infringement by the boys on the 'Jam
(not that they would admit it!) In The Blue
crossed next followed by Ten Plus
One and Interlude 2 3/4
min later (after the lads had a quiet cup of tea and
a few biscuits). This crew really knows how to start
with style!
Places didn't change a lot during the race with the
exception of Ten Plus One not completing
the course due to some strife with the Multi Purpose
Sail (MPS). The MPS is similar to a spinnaker - big,
showy and expensive. It is not the sort of sail you
would want to tear when the owner's away! Perhaps
this explains their timid display?
Race two saw another close start between Sweashop
and Champagne Jam with the former
across the line first, Champagne Jam electing
not to use the tactical advantage of "breaking
the rules" this time around. Ten Plus
One was next across after employing strategies
No. 1A and 1B of the "Breaking The Rules"
handbook i.e. "the biggest boat shall have right
of way over smaller boats on all occasions" and
"fear and intimidation may be used to full effect
over novice skippers".
Doug Williams heling In The Blue may
well be the next to borrow the keys from Uncle Ken
so he can exact sweet revenge. These two boats proceeded
to have a great tussle for the rest of the race.
