The headline answer

Three days is the sweet spot

We'll save you the suspense: three days is the right answer for most first-timers. It's enough to drive the full road, see every major attraction, time your visit to the Twelve Apostles for both sunset and sunrise, and have meaningful time in two towns. Less than three days and you rush; more than three days and you're either deep into the Otway forest or exploring towns west of Warrnambool.

If three days doesn't fit your schedule, the table below maps trip lengths to the experience you'll get. Click any card for the full day-by-day breakdown.

By trip type

Niche itineraries

The four standard durations cover most travellers, but some trip types deserve their own routing:

  • With kids โ€” extra beach time, the Otway Fly, kangaroos at Tower Hill, and shorter driving days.
  • Couples / romantic โ€” heritage cottage stays, fine-dining stops, helicopter flight at the Apostles.
  • Family โ€” multi-generation friendly, accessible viewpoints, longer accommodation stays.
  • Photography focus โ€” built around the strongest light at each location.

Each starts from the 3-day classic shape and adjusts. If you don't see your specific trip type, the 3-day classic adapts to most needs โ€” start there and tweak.

Still deciding?

The 3-day classic is the version locals recommend to friends. The 1-day version is for travellers with no flexibility. The 7-day version is for travellers with nothing to prove.
