Why it works for families

The Great Ocean Road's family-friendly fundamentals

Three things make the Great Ocean Road one of Australia's strongest family road trips. Reliable wildlife: koalas at Cape Otway and Kennett River are near-guaranteed; kangaroos at Anglesea Golf Course and Tower Hill are reliable; whales at Logans Beach in winter are a guaranteed hit. Engaging engineered attractions: the Otway Fly Treetop Walk, the Twelve Apostles helicopter scenic flight, the lighthouse tower tours all engage kids without demanding effort. Strong family caravan park infrastructure: every major town has at least one family caravan park with playgrounds, family cabins, and direct beach access.

The downsides are also predictable. The Twelve Apostles sunset rush is hard with very young kids (long return drive in dark). The cliff section south of Lorne is winding for car-sick prone kids. Some Otway hinterland walks are too long for under-8s. With those caveats accommodated, the road delivers consistently for families.

Recommended structure

A 4-day family itinerary

Day 1 — Melbourne → Anglesea

~110 km, easy first day. Bells Beach 15-min stop. Anglesea Golf Course kangaroos (free, immediate hit). Family check-in at Anglesea Family Caravan Park. Beach time + playground. Dinner at Anglesea Hotel. Sleep: Anglesea.

Day 2 — Anglesea → Apollo Bay via Otway Fly

~120 km. Slow morning at Anglesea. Drive west via Lorne (coffee + pier walk). Continue to Otway Fly Treetop Walk (90 min). Arrive Apollo Bay late afternoon. Family caravan park check-in. Foreshore play + harbour visit. Sleep: Apollo Bay.

Day 3 — Apollo Bay full day

~80 km internal. Cape Otway koala drive (the headline activity for kids). Maits Rest 30-min boardwalk. Lunch back at Apollo Bay. Beach time on the foreshore. Pizza at Casalinga for dinner. Sleep: Apollo Bay.

Day 4 — Apollo Bay → Twelve Apostles → home

~370 km. Drive west to the Twelve Apostles in mid-afternoon (skip the sunset rush with young kids). 1 hour at the Apostles + Loch Ard Gorge. Drive home via Princes Highway, arriving by ~8pm. Earlier-than-sunset timing is the key adjustment for families.

Frequently asked

Family itinerary FAQs

Is the Great Ocean Road good for kids?
Yes — one of Australia's most family-friendly road trips. Reliable wildlife (koalas at Cape Otway, kangaroos at Anglesea Golf Course and Tower Hill). Engaging attractions (Otway Fly, Twelve Apostles, helicopter scenic flights). Multiple patrolled family beaches. Strong family caravan parks across every major town. Mostly easy driving with regular stops.
What's the best Great Ocean Road itinerary for kids?
3 nights minimum with families: Anglesea night 1 (kangaroos at the golf course, family caravan park), Apollo Bay nights 2-3 (Otway Fly + Cape Otway koalas + working harbour). Avoid the Twelve Apostles sunset rush with very young kids — the long return drive is exhausting. For families with older kids (8+), the 3-day classic itinerary works well.
What attractions are best for kids?
Otway Fly Treetop Walk (the 600m steel walkway is a hit with most kids, accessible). Cape Otway koala drive (almost-guaranteed wildlife). Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve (drive among kangaroos and emus). Anglesea Golf Course kangaroos (free, immediate). Patrolled main beaches at Apollo Bay, Lorne, Anglesea. The Twelve Apostles helicopter flight (15 min, AU$165/person, kids love it).
Where should families stay?
Anglesea Family Caravan Park is the family standout — direct beach, large playground, family cabins. Apollo Bay Holiday Park has the Otway gateway position. Mantra Lorne for full beachfront resort experience. Peppers The Sands Torquay for kids' club. Multi-bedroom holiday rentals with kitchens work well for self-catering families. Family accommodation guide.
Are the walks suitable for kids?
Many. Maits Rest 30-min boardwalk loop (step-free, easy for prams). Erskine Falls upper viewpoint (accessible, the descent is harder). Cape Otway lightstation grounds (mostly accessible). Mariners Lookout (5-min drive then short walk). Avoid: Loch Ard Gorge beach descent with toddlers (100+ stairs), Hopetoun Falls (steep), longer Great Ocean Walk sections.
How long should a family Great Ocean Road trip be?
3-5 days is the sweet spot for most families. Less than 3 days and the long Day 1 + Day 3 driving exhausts everyone. More than 5 days and even active kids run out of patience. The 4-day variation with Anglesea + Apollo Bay × 2 + Port Campbell suits most families well.
What's the best time to take kids to the Great Ocean Road?
Spring (October-November) for active wildlife, baby koalas, mild weather. Autumn (March-April) for settled weather and reduced crowds. Avoid summer school holidays unless you book accommodation 6+ months ahead — the road gets busy and prices climb. Winter is too cold for beach time with kids.
What should you pack for kids on a Great Ocean Road trip?
Layers (coastal weather shifts quickly), swimwear, sturdy shoes for short walks, sun protection, snacks for between-stop sections, basic first-aid, water bottles, books or screens for the longer drive sections. Most family caravan parks have kids' play equipment so you don't need to bring much beyond clothing and your own bedding for cabin stays.
