Great Ocean Road waterfalls

Eight Otway falls within easy reach of the coast — from the headline Erskine to the quiet Cumberland River trail. Walking lengths, seasons, and which to skip in summer.

Why an Otway waterfall day

The freshwater half of the Great Ocean Road

The headline of the road is the coast — the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Surf Coast beaches. But inland from Lorne and Apollo Bay, the Otway Ranges hold something just as striking: temperate rainforest with old-growth myrtle beech, towering mountain ash, fern gullies, and a string of waterfalls falling between them.

This is the freshwater half of the Great Ocean Road, and the region's most underrated experience. Most visitors do one quick stop at Erskine Falls and move on. Anyone with a half-day to spare should consider a dedicated Otway loop — Erskine in the morning, Triplet and Hopetoun mid-day, lunch at the Forrest Brewery, and back to the coast for sunset.

Best season is autumn (April–May) and winter (June–August) when flow is highest. By late summer (February–March) the smaller falls drop to a trickle while the major ones (Erskine, Triplet, Hopetoun) keep running strongly. Plan accordingly.

Erskine Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Erskine Falls

30 m · 10 min from Lorne

⏱ Lookout: 5 min · Base: 30 min Lookout: Easy · Base: Moderate (250 steps) Year-round, peak after rain

The Otways' most famous fall. Drops 30 m in a single fern-fringed plunge. The base track is a hard-knee return up 250 steps but worth it for the photograph from below.

Tip

Visit early — by 10 am the carpark fills with bus tours.

Triplet Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Triplet Falls

20 m × 3 · Beech Forest road, 25 min from Apollo Bay

⏱ 2 km loop · 45 min Easy boardwalk Year-round

Three drops cascading through dense rainforest, viewed from a series of timber boardwalk lookouts. The walk itself winds through old-growth myrtle beech and sassafras — the best Otway forest experience compressed into 45 minutes.

Tip

Fern-canopy walking — wonderful in any weather.

Beauchamp Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Beauchamp Falls

20 m · Beech Forest area, near Triplet Falls

⏱ 1 km return · 30–45 min Moderate (steep return) Best Apr–Nov; lower flow Dec–Mar

Dramatic single-plunge fall in dense rainforest. Quieter than Triplet — most travellers skip it. The track descends sharply to the viewing platform; the climb back is the workout.

Tip

Combine with Triplet Falls for a strong half-day Otway day.

Hopetoun Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Hopetoun Falls

30 m · Beech Forest, near Aire Crossing

⏱ 1 km return · 30 min Moderate (steep steps to base) Year-round, peak after rain

Wide curtain of water dropping into the Aire River gorge. The base platform is the photograph — full ferns, mossy rocks, the whole forest theatre. Less crowded than Erskine.

Tip

Phone reception drops out — pre-load the directions.

Stevensons Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Stevensons Falls

10 m × tiered · Forrest area

⏱ 1 km return · 25 min Easy Year-round

Multi-tiered cascade rather than a single plunge. Family-friendly walk with no significant elevation change. Often paired with the Otway Hardwoods walk.

Tip

Best Otway falls for young children — flat track, low-effort.

Sheoak Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Sheoak Falls

15 m · Lorne, 5 min south of town

⏱ 1.5 km return from Sheoak Picnic Area · 40 min Easy Apr–Nov; almost dry Dec–Mar

Closest waterfall to Lorne. Gentle riverside walk through a fern gully. Flow drops noticeably in summer; visit after autumn or winter rain for the strongest version.

Tip

Easy add-on if you're already in Lorne — combine with Lorne foreshore.

Phantom Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Phantom Falls

12 m · Garvey Track, near Lorne

⏱ 5 km return · 1.5 h Moderate Apr–Nov

Off the standard tourist route. The walk in is the experience — through dense Otway hardwood and ferny gullies. Phantom is small but the trail is strong.

Tip

Wear proper boots — the track gets muddy after rain.

Cumberland Falls waterfall in the Otway forest

Cumberland Falls

15 m · Cumberland River, between Lorne and Apollo Bay

⏱ 5 km return · 1.5 h Moderate Apr–Nov

River-walk approach with multiple swimming-hole stops along the way. The fall itself is modest; the walking experience makes the trip. Quiet — most tourists never make it here.

Tip

Pack swimmers in summer — the river holes are cool and clean.

Half-day Otway loop

A practical waterfall plan from Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is the best base for a waterfall day because it sits at the foot of the Otways with quick access to the Beech Forest area inland. The standard half-day loop:

  1. 9:00 am — Apollo Bay → Erskine Falls (1 hour drive). Walk to lookout, then base-of-falls (45 min total).
  2. 11:00 am — Drive Erskine → Beech Forest area (45 min). Triplet Falls boardwalk loop (45 min).
  3. 12:30 pm — Hopetoun Falls quick visit (30 min) — only 5 minutes from Triplet.
  4. 1:30 pm — Lunch at Forrest Brewing Company (15 min back from Beech Forest). Pub menu, beer garden.
  5. 3:30 pm — Return to Apollo Bay (1.25 hours via Lavers Hill).

That's the strongest waterfall trio in 6.5 hours — perfect for a Day 2 of a 4-day Great Ocean Road trip.

Frequently asked

Otway waterfalls FAQs

What's the best waterfall on the Great Ocean Road?
Erskine Falls is the most famous and most photographed — 30 metres of single-plunge water in a fern-lined gorge, just 10 minutes from Lorne. For the strongest forest experience around a waterfall, Triplet Falls in Beech Forest is the better choice — three cascades and a 45-minute boardwalk loop through old-growth Otway rainforest. Both deserve a visit on a 2+ day Great Ocean Road trip.
When is the best time to visit Great Ocean Road waterfalls?
April to November — when the Otway forests are wettest and the falls are at peak flow. Some falls (Sheoak, Cumberland, Phantom) drop noticeably in summer and can be near-dry by February. The most reliable year-round falls are Erskine, Hopetoun and Triplet, which run strongly even in dry summers due to larger upstream catchments. Visit early morning to avoid bus tours at Erskine.
How long does it take to see Great Ocean Road waterfalls?
A quick lookout-only visit to Erskine Falls takes about 30 minutes including the drive from Lorne. The full base-of-falls walk adds 45 minutes. A waterfall day-trip — combining Erskine, Triplet and Hopetoun — needs 4–5 hours including driving. Adding waterfalls to the standard 3-day Great Ocean Road itinerary is best done as a dedicated half or full day rather than squeezing them between coastal stops.
Are Great Ocean Road waterfalls free?
Yes — all waterfalls in Great Otway National Park are free to visit. There's no entrance fee, no car park fee, no walk fee. Public toilets are available at the major falls (Erskine, Triplet, Hopetoun) and at picnic areas like Sheoak. There's no booking required for any waterfall walk.
Can you swim at Great Ocean Road waterfalls?
Officially no — Parks Victoria signage discourages swimming in the falls' plunge pools because of submerged debris and unstable rocks. Some fall pools are commonly used as swimming holes anyway (Cumberland River, Stevensons), but the official falls (Erskine, Hopetoun, Triplet, Beauchamp) are not safe for swimming. The Cumberland River walk has separate, safer swimming holes upstream of the fall itself.
Are Great Ocean Road waterfalls dog-friendly?
No. All eight waterfalls listed here sit within Great Otway National Park, where dogs (other than registered assistance dogs) are not permitted. There are no leashed exceptions. For dog-friendly water features in the region, look outside the national park to private forest reserves or river walks — the Aire River estuary has a leashed walk at the river mouth, for example.
What should I wear for Great Ocean Road waterfall walks?
Sturdy shoes with grip — most tracks have wet rocks and steps. Long pants help with leeches in wet months (April–October). A light waterproof jacket for surprise rain in the forest. Carry water and snacks. Don't bring a tripod expecting much space — viewing platforms are tight at popular falls. If you're doing multiple falls in one day, bring spare socks; tracks are muddy after rain.
Can you visit Great Ocean Road waterfalls in winter?
Yes — winter is actually the best time. Falls are at peak flow after winter rain, the forests are at their lushest, and the falls are quietest (few bus tours in winter). The downsides are short daylight, slippery tracks, and the chance of trail closures after major storms. Check Parks Victoria before driving in. Bring waterproofs and warm layers — the Otways are 5–8°C cooler than the coast.
