Towns along the road

Each town has a different character — pick wisely. Your accommodation choice shapes the whole trip.

How to use this page

From Torquay in the east to Port Fairy in the west

The towns along the Great Ocean Road run east to west: Torquay → Anglesea → Aireys Inlet → Lorne → Apollo Bay → Princetown → Port Campbell → Warrnambool → Port Fairy. They differ wildly in size and character — Torquay is a 18,000-person surf city; Princetown has barely 100 residents.

For a single-night trip, base in Apollo Bay (food + Otways) or Lorne (pier + Surf Coast). For a two-night trip, do one night in each. For a three-night trip, add Port Campbell to be near the Twelve Apostles for sunrise + sunset. For longer trips, add Port Fairy for the western end.

Quick comparison

Which town for which trip?

  • Best food + Otways: Apollo Bay. The midpoint, the strongest restaurant strip, the gateway to Cape Otway.
  • Best beach + cafés: Lorne. Crescent bay, pier, the road's prettiest town.
  • Closest to Twelve Apostles: Port Campbell. 12 minutes from the lookout. Strategic stop.
  • Surf capital: Torquay. Bells Beach, Australian Surfing Museum, official road's start.
  • Quiet alternative to Lorne: Aireys Inlet. Lighthouse town, less crowded.
  • Family friendly: Anglesea. Patrolled beach, kangaroos at the golf course.
  • Whales + western end: Warrnambool. Logans Beach for southern right whales, larger town with full facilities.
