Aireys Inlet

The Surf Coast's quietest town — Split Point Lighthouse on the headland, Eagle Rock cliff walks, the best café between Torquay and Lorne, and a cult-TV pilgrimage.

The character

A Surf Coast town that didn't grow into a resort

Aireys Inlet is the smallest of the four major Surf Coast towns — population 1,200, a single-block main strip, and an overall feel that's closer to a sleepy seaside village than a tourism hub. While Anglesea, Lorne, and Apollo Bay developed substantial resort infrastructure across the 20th century, Aireys Inlet stayed deliberately quieter. The town protects its character; new development is limited; the original 1880s feel remains.

For most travellers driving the Great Ocean Road, Aireys Inlet is a stop rather than a destination — 90 minutes for the lighthouse and the cliff walk, then onward to Lorne or Apollo Bay. But for travellers willing to sleep there overnight, the town rewards: empty beaches at sunrise, the Aireys Pub for an evening drink with locals, and proximity to all the Surf Coast attractions without any of the summer crowds.

The town's three anchor points are Split Point Lighthouse (the 1891 'White Queen' on the southern headland), Eagle Rock and the connected cliff-top walks, and the strong main-street café scene anchored by A La Grecque (one of the Surf Coast's best restaurants). All three sit within 10 minutes' walk of each other.

A typical day

What fills a stop in Aireys Inlet

For a brief stop on a road trip, focus on three things: the Split Point Lighthouse tower tour or grounds (1 hour), the cliff walk loop linking Eagle Rock and Pulpit Rock (45 min), and lunch at A La Grecque.

For a full half-day, add: a swim at the patrolled town beach, the Aireys Inlet historical society small museum, and a coffee at one of the secondary cafés. For an overnight, add a sunset walk along the cliff path to Pulpit Rock, dinner at A La Grecque or the Aireys Pub, and a sunrise lighthouse photography session before driving on.

Most travellers underestimate Aireys Inlet because the road is busy and the town is small. The actual draw — the cliffs, the lighthouse, the empty beaches — only becomes clear when you stop for longer than the 30-minute lighthouse photo.

Frequently asked

Aireys Inlet FAQs

Is Aireys Inlet worth visiting?
Yes — Aireys Inlet is the quietest of the major Surf Coast towns and arguably the most photogenic. The Split Point Lighthouse on the headland is one of the road's iconic landmarks; Eagle Rock and Pulpit Rock create dramatic cliff-walks; and the small main strip on the Great Ocean Road has excellent cafés (notably A La Grecque). Most travellers stop for 60–90 minutes; an overnight stay rewards visitors who appreciate quieter coastal towns.
How far is Aireys Inlet from Melbourne?
About 125 km from Melbourne CBD via the M1 to Geelong, then south on the Surf Coast Highway through Torquay, then the Great Ocean Road. Total drive time is about 1 hour 45 minutes direct, or 2.5 hours with stops at Bells Beach and Memorial Arch on the way.
What is there to do in Aireys Inlet?
Climb the Split Point Lighthouse tower (guided tours daily), walk the cliff loop linking Eagle Rock and Pulpit Rock, swim at Aireys Inlet beach, eat at A La Grecque, browse the Aireys Pub for live music, and explore the Round the Twist filming locations. The cliff walks alone fill a relaxed half-day.
Where should I stay in Aireys Inlet?
Aireys Inlet has a smaller accommodation pool than Lorne or Apollo Bay but the quality is high. Best options include Lighthouse Tea Rooms (heritage cottages), Aireys Cliff Side, multiple holiday rentals on the residential streets, and a few boutique B&Bs. For more rooms, Lorne (12 km south) is the next-door alternative.
What's the Round the Twist connection?
Split Point Lighthouse and the cliffs around Aireys Inlet were the primary filming location for the cult Australian children's TV series Round the Twist (1989–2001). The lighthouse keeper's cottage in the show is the actual cottage you can see. Generations of Australian and British kids associate this exact view with the show. See our Split Point Lighthouse guide for filming spots.
Can you swim at Aireys Inlet?
Yes — Aireys Inlet beach (the main town beach) is patrolled in summer and reasonable for swimming. The exposed coastal aspect means waves can be larger than at Lorne. For gentler swimming, Stephens Beach (just north) and the protected coves between Aireys and Anglesea offer alternatives. Always swim between the flags during patrol hours.
How long should I stay in Aireys Inlet?
A few hours covers the lighthouse, the cliff walk, and lunch. One night gives you the morning lighthouse tour plus a sunset walk around the headland. As a base for Surf Coast exploration, 1–2 nights works; for extended Great Ocean Road stays, Apollo Bay (90 min west) is more strategically positioned.
Is Aireys Inlet good for couples?
Yes — particularly couples who appreciate quieter towns over busier resort vibes. The cliff walks at sunset, the small dining scene, the lighthouse keeper cottage stays, and the absence of large coach groups make Aireys Inlet a strong alternative to Lorne for romantic short breaks.
