Beaches and the Anglesea River

The Surf Coast's most family-friendly beach plus the calm river mouth for toddlers, Pt Roadknight surf at the southern end, and quieter coves nearby.

The setting

A sheltered bay plus a calm river mouth

Anglesea sits where the Anglesea River meets the Southern Ocean. That geography produces two distinct swimming environments within walking distance of each other β€” the main bay beach (gentle waves, patrolled in summer, family-friendly) and the protected river mouth (calm sheltered water, ideal for very young children).

Surfers head south to Pt Roadknight, the local intermediate-friendly point break. The full Surf Coast Walk passes through Anglesea, opening up additional cliff-top beach access at Smiths Beach and beyond. Compared to Lorne or Apollo Bay, Anglesea's beach scene is more family-focused and less surf-tourism-driven β€” a fit for travellers prioritising swimming over photography.
