The sheltered Shipwreck Coast cove

One of the few protected swimming coves on the entire Shipwreck Coast โ€” calm, sheltered, walking distance from accommodation. Plus fishing piers and cliff-top walks.

The setting

A rare safe swim on the Shipwreck Coast

The Shipwreck Coast is generally not for swimming. The 130-kilometre stretch from Princetown to Warrnambool is mostly exposed open coast with strong currents, heavy swell, and rocky inshore zones. Peterborough is the rare exception โ€” a sheltered natural cove between sandstone cliffs that creates one of the few protected swimming environments on this entire stretch.

That makes Peterborough's beach disproportionately valuable for travellers wanting actual swimming during a Shipwreck Coast stay. The cove sits walking distance from the village's accommodation. Family-friendly conditions. The same geographical feature also creates the protected harbour that sustains the small local fishing operation.

Beaches in detail

Safe swim

Peterborough Cove

Sheltered harbour beach

The protected swimming cove. Sandstone cliffs break the swell on three sides. Gentle waves, calm-water swimming on most days. Walking distance from accommodation. Not patrolled โ€” stay near the beach; cove mouth has currents.

Peterborough Pier

Fishing + walking

Working fishing pier extending into the protected cove. Popular for fishing โ€” bream, salmon, snapper. Also a good photo and walking spot. Sometimes a starting point for boat charter trips.

Bay of Martyrs

3 km west ยท Cliff-top + small beach

Cliff-top viewpoints over offshore sea stacks, with limited beach access via short walks. Better for photography than swimming. Often empty.

Childers Cove

35 min west ยท Hidden cove

Quiet protected cove with walk-down access. Far quieter than Peterborough or Bay of Islands. Better for solitude than family swimming.

Frequently asked

Peterborough beaches FAQs

Is Peterborough beach safe for swimming?
Yes โ€” Peterborough's harbour cove is one of the few sheltered swimming environments on the entire Shipwreck Coast. Sandstone cliffs break the swell on three sides, leaving a calm protected beach. Not patrolled, but the geometry makes it the safest swim option west of Port Campbell. Stay near the beach; currents pulse at the cove mouth.
Why is Peterborough's beach safe when others aren't?
Geometry. Most Shipwreck Coast beaches face directly into the open Southern Ocean with no protection. Peterborough's cove is a small natural inlet between sandstone headlands that block the worst of the swell. The same geological forces that produced the Twelve Apostles created Peterborough's protected harbour โ€” but here the erosion left a sheltered pocket rather than offshore stacks.
Can you fish at Peterborough?
Yes โ€” the local pier and rocky headlands are popular fishing spots. Bream, salmon, snapper, and occasional trevally. The local fishing operation also sometimes runs charter trips. Bring your own gear or buy basics at the General Store.
Are dogs allowed on Peterborough beach?
Yes, with restrictions. Off-leash zones outside summer patrol times. The cove and adjacent foreshore generally welcome leashed dogs. Always check current Moyne Shire signage. The wider Bay of Martyrs viewpoints (3 km west) typically allow dogs on leash.
What's the water temperature at Peterborough?
Cool. Summer (Dec-Feb): 16-18ยฐC. Winter (Jun-Aug): 11-13ยฐC. Slightly cooler than the eastern Surf Coast due to the more exposed coastal aspect. Wetsuits make summer swimming comfortable; without one, expect 5-10 minutes of swimming in summer.
Are there other beaches near Peterborough?
Bay of Martyrs (3 km west) โ€” clifftop viewpoints, occasional small beach access. The wide remote stretches west toward Childers Cove (35 min) and east toward Loch Ard Gorge (25 min). The Twelve Apostles Marine Park area beaches (Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge cove) are accessible via separate stops.
Can you surf at Peterborough?
Limited. The protected cove is too sheltered for proper surfing. The exposed coastal sections nearby are sometimes rideable on smaller days but require local knowledge. For real surfing, drive east to Apollo Bay or further to the Surf Coast.
